Biography

Judge Connie Steinheimer, a Nevada native, graduated from the University of Nevada, Reno, with a degree in social psychology.  She worked as a juvenile probation officer before earning her law degree from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon.  She is admitted to practice in Oregon, Nevada, the United States District Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit.  After receiving her law degree, Judge Steinheimer returned to Reno and worked as a Deputy District Attorney.  She entered private practice, specializing in civil and criminal litigation in 1984, and then was elected a Second Judicial District Court Judge in 1992 and re-elected in 1996, 2002 and 2008.

Judge Steinheimer has been an active member of the Washoe County and State legal communities.  She is a member of the American Bar Association, the Washoe County Bar Association, the American Judges Association, the National Association of Women Judges, the Nevada District Judge's Association, and the Northern Nevada Women Lawyers Association.  In addition, Judge Steinheimer works to bring the legal community to the public through education, having served as an instructor for Washoe County School District Security, the Veterans Administration Hospital, and the University of Nevada. Judge Steinheimer chaired the Governor’s Commission for the Training of Mandated Reporters of Child Abuse and Neglect, which authored a training manual for the State of Nevada.  She has taught criminal and civil procedure, trial practice, jury management, voir dire, managing complex litigation, electronic filing, and ethics for the State Bar of Nevada, Nevada Justice Association, Washoe County Bar Association, Oregon Presiding Judges’ Conference and the American Bar Association, and is a past alumna and current faculty member of the National Judicial College.

Judge Steinheimer ceaselessly strives to improve the role of the Court in the State legal system, serving on the Nevada Capital Case Advisory Committee and the NCJIS/UCR Advisory Committee.  She has been appointed by the Nevada Supreme Court to the Pro Se Counsel, the Judicial Discipline Committee as a Special Judicial Member, Access to Justice Commission and appointed to sit with the Supreme Court to hear appeals.  Through her work on the Nevada State Bar Criminal Practice and Procedure Committee, she worked to streamline the State Appellate Process, a measure which was largely adopted by the Nevada Supreme Court.

Within the Second Judicial District Court, Judge Steinheimer serves as the Chief Judge for the District and Chair of the Washoe County Criminal Justice Advisory Committee.  She has previously chaired the Second Judicial District Budget, Criminal Bench/Bar, Civil Bench/Bar and Court Technology Committees.  She has been responsible for the court technology improvements and implementation of data imaging and the District’s electronic filing.
