Grant L. Bowen was born December 7, 1908, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Herbert N. Bowen and Marion Grant. Judge Bowen was raised in Carson City, Nevada and attended Carson High School. After graduation, he attended the University of Nevada, Reno and later attended Northwestern University Law School. Judge Bowen was admitted to the practice of law in Nevada in 1934.
Judge Bowen was an Assistant District Attorney in Washoe County from 1931 to 1942. He left legal practice for a brief time to serve in the United States Army in 1942. Following a discharge from military service, Judge Bowen returned to legal practice as an Assistant District Attorney from 1947 to 1950. In 1950, he joined and worked as the secretary of the Reno Civil Service Commission. In 1954, Judge Bowen was appointed as a district court judge and served on the bench until his retirement in 1984.
Judge Bowen was an active member of his community serving as a Washoe County Bar President, Mason, Knight Templar, Shrine, Reno Elk Lodge member, and three terms as the director of the local YMCA. He married True Giffords Bowen, and they had one son, John L. Bowen. Judge Bowen died, March 30th, 1992, at the age of 83.
