James A. Stone was born in 1942. He was from Tacoma, Washington. His uncle was a justice on the Supreme Court of Washington. Mr. Stone served in the U.S. Army. He was also an amateur boxer.
He began his professional career in banking. As an older student, he then attended the University of Nevada, Reno, where he was elected student body president. He graduated from McGeorge Law School.
In 1980, he passed the Nevada bar. Mr. Stone practiced law in Sparks. He was a partner with William Byrd in a law firm there. He was also a sole practitioner. He was on the board of the Volunteer Attorneys of Washoe County.
Mr. Stone was in the Nevada Assembly from 1982 through 1986. While in the legislature, he was the chairman of the Assembly Judiciary Committee.
In 1990, he ran for the judgeship of the newly created Department 10 of the Second Judicial District Court. Judge Stone was elected and served on the bench from 1991 to 1996. He became a President of the Nevada District Judges Association.
Retired Judge Brent Adams said that Judge Stone was known for helping other judges. He would take their court calendar if they had to take time from the bench for a family matter, etc.
Within a few years after leaving the Court, Judge Stone relocated from Nevada.
He died in Holland, Michigan, at the age of 73 in July 2015.
